While the COVID pandemic has brought tragedy and chaos to 2020, we’re glad it hasn’t reached the apocalyptic proportions of the virus in Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys. Celebrating its 25th birthday today, 12 Monkeys was released to critical praise and even earned an Oscar nomination for Brad Pitt’s performance.
The film’s premise, centering on a man who travels back in time to stop a virus from occurring, is a now all-too relatable idea. Today’s clip showcases Gilliam’s iconic style of production design and cinematography and also uses a cleverly-placed Looney Tunes episode to incorporate whacky and cartoonish sound effects over Pitt’s insane monologue.
As we revisit 12 Monkeys at the end of such a wild year, let’s also look to the future—and hope things are better in the next one.
