Sergio Leone redefined the Western genre with his Dollars Trilogy, particularly with its second (but most famous) installment: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly (1966). While initially released to mixed criticism, the movie was eventually hailed as a masterpiece thanks to its creative use of long shots and close-ups, Ennio Morricone’s now-famous musical score, and the cast’s iconic performances.
Due to the nature of filming at the time, sound was never recorded on set. All dialogue is ADR, and the rest of the sound was added after the fact as well. That makes this scene the perfect subject for re-designing! Sound design elements didn’t really exist in the mid-60s, so music had to be more expertly crafted—but now that we have these elements, we can bring this Eastwood vehicle to life in a new way. Let’s experience this scene with a 21st century twist with sound design in place of music!
